The key here is to outline the week one purchases for Season 4 and what exactly you need to buy the best you can at 1700 rating week 1. All this is based on your ability to get 1700 personal & team rating in week one, if you meet the goals you can buy gear in any order. Agian both your personal and team rating must be 1700. I suggest hitting the marks below then buy the gear as soon as possible. You can buy the arena gloves and honor belt without even playing a game as soon as the gear is released.
Arena Gear - Week 1 Goal is 4,875 arena points.
- This is easy, Purchase the Head, Chest and Gloves for 4,875 Arena Points. That’s your saving mark. The cap is 5k.
That way all you will need in the future is 1,875 more points and a 1,550 rating for the Legs to finish the poor mans season 4 set and get both bonuses.
The new Season 4 items will have the below personal and team arena rating requirements:
Shoulders: 2200
Weapon: 2050
Head: 1700
Chest: 1600
Legs: 1550
Gloves: none
Off-hand: none
Honor Gear - Week 1 Goal is 62,794 honor and 40 EOTS, 10 AV, 20 WSG, 40 AB marks.
- First you should have your season 4 trinket, they released it early to give you a chance to get that 40k honor out of the way. The goal set above will get you:
Boots: 1700
Probable cost: 17,850 honor, 40 EOTS marks
Ring: 1650
probable cost: 15,300 honor, 10 AV marks
Bracers: 1575
Probable cost 11,794 honor 20 WSG marks.
Belt: none
Expected cost: 17,850 honor and 40 AB marks.
From there all you need to do is save up 15,300 honor and 10 EOTS marks for the neck and you will have a full set of season 4 honor gear.

It’s going to be a real friggin’ challenge getting the shoulders this season. Not only because the rating requirement, but the “Can’t play with friends” change now restricts arena to a fully competetive environment, which means less people at the 1500-2000 bracket but more competetion at 2k+, for most battlegroups.

Basically you can’t get a high rating (and gear) if you try to arena with causal buddies anymore. You have to have good/geared players to get higher gear.

Darn, that means I’m not going to have enough time to acquire enough arena points before S4 begins. I’ll likely have enough Honor points though at least.

During S2, I dropped my buddies (and my wife) for a decent rating. I was on cookie cutter teams and did very well, but by the end of the season I hated being in the arena at all.
Now I my wife plays on my team, along with some friends from work. Our team sucks and I quit caring so much about our rating. I had accepted that I wouldn’t be able to wear the shoulders or get a weapon. I could live with that and was happy to choose my friends over the loot. I could still play arena, the bg and get into some pvp gear. I could still play pvp with some success.
With these new requirements, it will make things extremely difficult for me. I won’t give up on it and will try to find work arounds where I can, but this could ultimately run me out of the game. I know that 1700 shouldn’t be all that tough, but right now I am having rough time even maintaining 1600.
I understand the ideas behind these changes, but I am sad to see them.

Will S2 be available by honor purchase when S4 comes out? Also, you stated that “You can buy the arena gloves and honor belt without even playing a game as soon as the gear is released.” Do you mean that even if I have never touched pvp before i can go right out and buy the gloves and belt from the arena vendor?

S2 will be up for honor purchase.
You will have to have the points needed from season 3 to buy the gloves/belt. You will not have to play any S4 games to buy them if you already have enough points.
