Keybindings

November 24th, 2008

The winner of our last contest is; Felic (Please contact me with proof that it is you via PM on our forums)

With his ideas of;

Glyph of Repentance: if repentance is broken before its full duration the target is silenced for 2 seconds.

Glyph of the Scarlet Defender: While your Holy Shield is active, undead targets deal 3% less damage.

Glyph of Salvation: Reduces the cooldown of your Hand of Salvation by 50%

Glyph of Kings: Increases the bonus received from kings by 1%

These all are very solid glyph ideas.

In other news, I’m getting there. 75 so far, leveling to me is a lot like church, I feel like the moment I look away I’m going to hell. Oh and I do look away. I grab some crackers, chillax, tab out, watch something on Hulu.com and then next thing I know, I’m doing the exact opposite of leveling.

I feel however, that Wrath is a very strong expansion, and a better, more well thought out game overall compared to Burning Crusade. I even like the theme of it more.

One thing a few people have been asking me about lately is Keybindings. The easiest way for me to spot someone that isn’t playing at their full potential is when I see they don’t have their keys bound. Don’t take that the wrong way. I understand you might be comfortable with clicking and that it would take time to learn key pressing instead, but trust me when I tell you, you will become a better player if you let yourself become just as comfortable with keybinds as you are with clicking.

The main question about keybindings for people though is “How should I bind my keys?” Everyone is different so take that into account when answering and making this statement. You need to do what is natural. Don’t bind everything at once, you will completely cluster your head and it just wont be as easy of a process as it would be if you did it slowly, getting down 2-3 moves and then moving up in how many binds you have.

Most classes have a spammable ability. These make them interactive and fun. We have a few short cd attacks that should be spammed near the time they are ready. These need to go on keys that are easy for you to repeat. Obviously Shift + 9 isn’t a very good bind for Crusader Strike. However, a good bind might be “1″. Infact that’s what my bind is.

For me 1 =
/startattack
/cast Crusader Strike

I can spam this, won’t even have to click the person as long as they are the closest thing (this is amazing for going against stealth and they are the only thing around, if you see them it won’t be a matter of clicking on them first) It’s so easy for my left ring finger to spam that button.

Other keybindings need to take into account how often you use the spell. Blessing of Sacrifice for example, isn’t used very often, but still needs to be fairly easy to press. Shift + 4 is easy for me, but I have to think about it very slightly to press it. Perfect for a spell I premeditate to use. More important things, like Hammer of Wrath, which aren’t used very often but are required to go off ASAP should be placed in a more reasonable location. “F” is my bind for Hammer of Wrath. I find that to be one of the best buttons to have as a finishing move that you wont want to always press but it feels just as natural to press as “1″

So spells like, Avenging Wrath, which you want to premeditate before using, are far on the keyboard for me. “H” is my Avenging Wrath. This allows easy access but thought required, on top of that you will notice that it is near my Hammer of Wrath. When someone gets bopped, and you blow Avenging Wrath + Hammer of Wrath to finish someone, you feel that much better and realize how much it was worth binding those keys.

Remember you need to keep your bindings feeling natural. I know the ladies and men with smaller hands usually don’t stretch to buttons like, “H” and “N” so if you are one who falls into that category you should focus on keeping binds easy for small hands, and vice verse for bigger hands, take advantage of how far you can stretch without a lot of thought process.

There is one thing to be said for keybindings that I will never stress enough, after you bind your buttons the game changes for you. Your character feels more in sync to what you are thinking, and doesn’t feel like the middle man between you and the game. Trust me when I say again and again, every player that wants to enjoy this game to the fullest needs to bind their keys.

    level your ass faster!

    and read the blue post on upcoming paladin changes:

    http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=12891294929&sid=1

  2. Slayton

    I’ll be 80 within the week.

    I’ve read the changes already, and I fully agree with them.

  3. UnstableOne

    Most of them are needed. I’m still disappointed there’s no new pvp crap but yet another change related to bubble. Bubble penalty is needed but so are the generic melee skills. Sometime before next expansion, i wish.

    Playing without +int on your gear sucks at the moment too. Maybe if blizzard would have actually tested it…

    BTW our glyphs suck. I dont even have a 3rd minor glyph. I would have gotten glyph of turn evil but opted to get the pos crusader strike one eventhough it barely helps the mana situation (depending on who is in your group.) If only I could have might and bow on myself [solo] with a glyph…

  4. Felic

    When I was playing arena back in the days ;) I could not have done it without an addon called Clique. It lets you set binds for spells directly with your mouse without having to use a bar for them.

    For example I had shift + leftclick for BoSacrifice and I just quickly clicked my raidframe, and still kept my target on attack so I would not stop going at him. Leftclick was then for BoP and just right click was dispel.

    Also Quartz, an amazing tool even though you would not think it matters.. it does. Each time I had just swunged (???) my sword I would look at the timer and normally throw off a dispel or two before next autoattack, which came in really handy vs. 2xcasters + bloodlust.

  5. Devalkyrie

    I enjoy the thems and story’s more than BC as well.

    And I love the artwork.

    Here’s to 2200 at 80 and enjoy the ride there.

  6. Harv

    I just hit 80 today. I”ve completed all the quests in all but two of the zones (Icecrown and Howling Fjord) and I can say that this is really the first time I’ve been interested in the stories behind the quests.

    It seems they’ve picked up some better writers and had much more thought out ideas behind the quest lines. I found them to be more enjoyable and interesting to read. In fact I think the Wintergarde chain that leads to the cut scene at Forddragon Keep and then the raid on Undercity is by far the best quest I’ve ever done in WoW.

  7. Crucifiction

    Keybinding is the transition that will take a player who understands their class but moves clunkily to the top. You don’t have to take your eyes off the screen, you don’t have to waste mouse movement, and you start to be more aware of your environment (important in both PvE and PvP) as well as having faster reaction times.

    Some examples of keybindings. I have medium hands so I don’t use keybindings that are a stretch - also I hate ctrl.

    1 - DS
    2 - SoB
    3 - JoL
    4 - CS
    5 - Repentance
    6 - Exorcism
    F - HoJ
    E - Trinket
    M4 - Cleanse (Mouseover, target, self)
    M5 - HoW
    Shift+1 - FoL
    Shift+2 - BoSac
    Shift+3 - JoJ
    Shift+4 - HL
    Shift+E - BoP
    Shift+F- HoJ Focus
    Shift+5 - Repent Focus
    Shift+Spcbr - Divine Shield
    Shift+MswhlUp - Freedom

    Those are my main keybindings. They’re not gonna work for everyone they just happen to be what I’m comfortable using. More keybindings for less used things, further away or more impractical to hit.

  8. Aedreus

    I use a few key bindings, but not a lot, mainly only the things I use very often or very instinctively and quickly. I always wondered how people who keybind everything access things like the Character sheet or Honor sheet, which are default C and H. Do they re-bind these to something else? or use the menu buttons?

    I think I would find this a tad annoying, C for Character and H for honor make sense to me, and having to click on things every time I view them would quickly get old. Although I guess its better than having to click a spell every time you use it in combat.

    On the recent paladin changes. I think they are all pretty fair. It’s a shame I can’t bubble and HoP my partner at the same time now, but it’s not the end of the world, and at least I can use wings more often. I’ll reserve my judgement of the wisdom change until I see some numbers, as GC didn’t say what % base mana would be returned.

  9. Ferraro

    Congratulations, Felic! =)

    Indeed. Garts.

  11. Dragonspear

    Grats Felic ^.^

    @Aedreys - Since I use both C and H for other keybinds (I will list all mine farther down in my post) but I just use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+H for Character Sheet and Honor Tab Respectively.

    @Harv Grats on 80, I’m a bar away from 79 myself

    @Everyone who says that LK’s Story is better than TBC, your god damn right it is. I’m still busy drooling all over Icecrown atm :D

    keybindings greatly improve your game

  21. Brach

    I recommend binding S and F to strafe and E and D to forward and backward run. It opens up more options for key binds.

  22. Rolibar

    Key-bindings are a great topic. Something I’ve put a ton of thought into while working up the system I use.

    My basic premise going in was I don’t want to have to move my hands a lot. The idea being that if what you need is always under your finger its faster. Of course easier said then done.

    So for me this is what I worked out and why.

    Right hand on mouse, left have on keyboard and I still have the WASD buttons mapped as movement. This lets me still run and turn etc. will looking for something in my bag or dealing with any of the number of none combat type things that I still click for.

    Combat however and the mouse becomes movement and the fingers on the AD shift up to QE. Both are set to macros. Q is a spell sequence for DS/Conc. E for JoW/CS. Both start with /Start Attack. This way when I’m in a position to go “all out” I can just mash through both Q and E and cycle through my 4 main attacks or just E when I’m in a spot with CC and can’t use AOE. CS is also bound to the G16 button (Logic keyboard) because it has a shorter cool down then JoW and thus as you cycle the rotation of JoW/CS I can still sneak in CS here and there by hitting it with my pinky with out having to move my hands of the main attack cycle buttons. From there the E finger shifts to F for HoW and G for Exo and most of my main day to day attack options are covered with little to no hand movement.

    The QWE fingers can also shift up quickly to the 12345 buttons where I have heals, hands etc. set or farther up to the F1 to F4 buttons where wings and stuns are set.

    The end result being that with very little movement of my left hand I’m able to access everything I need to quickly.

    So while this might not work for everyone, I think the concept of mapping this way is one that everyone can use.

    Put your hand on the keyboard the way you want it to rest. Then map the spells that you use most to the keys easiest to press. For me that means my middle finger rests on the W button and everything else fans out from there based how often I use it.

  23. Tanowan

    q JoW or JoL
    e CS
    Shift+e Consecrate
    Shift+q HoW
    Shift+3 HoP (pvp) or BoSalv (pve)
    Shift+f HoF (target=focus or raid1)
    1 Cleanse
    2 JoJ
    3 HoF
    4 (I forgot what I have here….lol)
    5 HoJ
    Shift+Space Seal button (whichever seal I put in that slot…)

  24. Malkeior

    I use a N52te so I just picked the keys that don’t have base bindings but previously I used ESDF for my forward, back and strafe, just so I could use more keys.

  25. killtehnoob

    This is a pretty good topic. I was just talking to one of the pallies in my guild about this. I think I’d be a better pvp (do key binds help all that much in pve substantially?) player if I keybound things. I’m guessing to go along with that you should move with your mouse and not the keyboard? I have a few things keybound but they revolve around my wadx movement. Trying to use the mouse just gets me dizzy. Maybe I should turn down the sensitivity. :(

  26. Emitt

    1:CS
    2:DS
    3:Judge(jow/jol)
    4:judge(joj)
    g:conc
    x:repentance
    shift+x: seal 2 (corruption, might make it divine plea)
    c:seal (blood/comm)
    shift+c:FoL
    v:AW
    shift+v:HL
    z:BoF/S/taunt
    f:HoJ
    a:Fear/HW
    d:arcane torment
    t:bop
    shift+g:pvp trinket
    shift+f:bubble
    M4: HoW
    M5: cleanse
    ——————–
    q:strafe left
    w:forward
    e: strafe right
    s:backward
    r:auto run
    ——————–
    /: char pan
    ]: run/walk
    F5: set focus
    ——————–
    backspace: re-whisper
    ..

    that’s about it off the top of my head.
    i’m probably missing some things.

    basically my hands can make some weird positions. otherwise this set up would suck.
    i enjoy it because:
    very dense area of important keys
    i always have at least one finger on movement keys while dpsing/doing whatever with no loss
    i’ve used it for a long time
    limits gaps between stuff

  27. Hayken

  29. dontloseyourhair

    Hi there, really enjoying your style - good to have you in the blogosphere - you aren’t just talkin to yourself!

  30. Exeed

    Too many binds for me to post here. But i do believe that using keybindings CAN help you become a faster player, as long as you’ve gotten used to where everything is, and have keybound everything you use on a regular basis, you’re golden. Implementing and using them may be harder than you might think, but once you’ve gotten the hang of them, they can serve as a great tool.

  31. Murazorr

    I play Murazorr on Feathermoon

  33. Richoshist

    I do not move with my keyboard at all. I have the Visiontek XG6 mouse, and this allows a few extra buttons along with two 4-way PoV switches you can keybind as well. I do all my movements with my mouse (except jump.)

    1-Cleanse
    2-Exorcism
    3-Holy Light
    4-Flash of Light
    5-Sacred Shield
    6-Battlemaster Trinket
    Q-Every Man for Himself (PvP trinket)

  34. Drosii

    ~ = AW + AP trinket
    1 = Seal of Blood
    2 = Judgement of Wisdom
    3 = Crusader Strike
    4 = Divine Storm/Consecrate castsequence macro.
    F = Hammer of Wrath
    E = Hammer of Justice
    Q = Divine Shield (both for convenience and irony)
    R = Flash of Light
    T = Exorcism/Divine Wrath
    G = Repentance
    Z = Cleanse mouseover macro
    X = Hand of Freedom mouseover macro
    C = Arcane Torrent (Shift for Divine Plea)
    V = Hand of Salvation
    B = PvP trinket

    Note:
    I have 2-4 as macros with AP trinket bound, so if forbearance is up, it will use the trinket anyways.

    Also, I have noticed that alot of the bindings seems to implicate a DS -> CS -> Judge or CS -> DS -> Judge rotation. I always Judge first to try to get Libram AP procs (if using Seal of Command) or to activate crit buff if using Libram of Furious Blows (?)…am I doing it wrong?

  35. Exeed

    Nope… should judge first.

  36. Kireina

    I’m a bit of a bind whore. I can’t stand clicking anything if I can avoid it. So yea…here’s the list.

    @Drosii Ya I Bind MS to the Q key on my Warrior and to Chains of Ice on my DK >< I figure I can get away with Q for HL though since a 10k crit heal will make someone QQ as well :D

  38. Drosii

    @Dragonspear
    Q = Fear on warlock, MS on warrior, Arcane Barrage on mage, Death Grip on DK, Pain Suppression on Priest, and Shadowmeld on my night elf druid (coincidentally, shift+Q is flight form…shadowmeld -> flight form = new levels of ganking pleasure. qQ I’m gone! ;D)
    Irony can be so ironic.

    I use to use foot pedals to alternate betwen keys.

    I configure my 3 Foot Pedals to Shift, alt an ctrl keys. That allows me to use much less buttons then u guys at a MUCH faster response.

    See yall in arenas.

    Recently I’ve bought a mouse with some additional buttons on it (actually 4-directional ring and a big red button in it for the thumb, wheel that can be pushed right and left, additional “3 shot” button on left one).

    Mouse is programmable, so I use the following bindings:

    For right thumb: forward button on the ring - auto run (it’s pretty uncomfortable to push it during the fight, so it’s not used for simple forward movement), big red button - forward, rest of the ring - strafe left/right and step back.

    This way my left hand is used only to cast, not for the movement. I can easily place the buttons as I want there. So the left hand lies on f-j keys and its thumb is able to press either Space or Alt key. Almost all letters are used for spells and other stuff I need instantly. Alt+letter keys are used this way too. Center of the keyboard - most used. Party members are on number keys from 5, auras are Alt+numbers. Alt is also my “Auto loot” key. (;

    All functions I don’t need while I’m in the fight (character, talents and other windows) are on Ctrl+ keys.

    I must say that the idea of splitting movement and abilities to the different hand helps much. You can move and cast instants or use potions really simple, these don’t share the same finger. (:

    Oh, I’ve forgotten of the rest of the mouse keys. “3 shot” is used to target an enemy and the wheel right/left is really used to mounting and to fishing. (; I don’t really need so much in combat and sometimes I prefer to use just one hand to travel and leave the other one to have some tea/beer with cookies/sandwiches/whatever. ((:

    BTW: The idea of foot pedals looks not just useful, but also healthy…

    Try to get yourself a g15 keyboard

    1 button press = 3 to 10 different keybinds. Tie in some macros on the keybinds and your a one-touch walking murder machine.

    The ultimate in lazyass true, but nothing like tearing down multiple enemies in 2 button presses.

  45. marble doctor

    I am very happy that I found this site.

  46. Qix

    One thing i do that helps a lot also: I set one of my Mouse’s thumb buttons to shift. (When i tried a hunter the other was control). This makes all those shift+1, etc keys even smoother and more natural to use (for me).

  47. Protflash

    My keybindings are very easy, I only use my left hand to get acces to most spells. Here’s my keybinds:
    1=CS
    2=JoL
    3=DS
    4=Exorcism
    5=Concectration
    6=Holy Wrath
    7=Repentance
    +=Hand of Reckoning(Taunt)
    Q=Blood elf racial silence
    E=Cleanse
    F1=Trinket+Avenging Wrath macro (I use Wrathstone as trinket in PvE)
    F2= Divine Plea
    F3=Lay on Hands
    S-E=HoJ
    S-Q=Bubble+Divine Sacrifice macro
    S-R=HoP
    Mouse 5=HoF
    S-Mouse 5=HoSalv

    on Bar 2-
    1=Holy light
    2=FoL
    3=Random(HoSac, Divine Protection etc)

  48. Wynadorn

    I’m happy with these keybindings =)

  49. Mithharn

    A PvE key binding tip is to bind them the way your rotation is. When this post was made, the rotation was: Judgement, Crusader Strike, Consecration, Divine Storm, Exorcism, Holy Wrath.

    And therefore they are:
    1. Judgement
    2. Crusader Strike
    3. Consecration
    4. Divine Storm
    5. Exorcism
    6. Holy Wrath

    That makes it much easier, and it can also be used in PvP. Hope this helped someone.

    I use a razer naga. 12 buttons in reach of my thumb and then another 12 for alt shift etc its awesome faceroll
