Sarcasm and lack of ponies.

January 17th, 2010

After the hilarity of a few responses to my previous post, I took a trip down nostalgia lane and watched some of the old classic Paladin-with-retribution-like-qualities movies that not too many people know about today (Jamaz, Zalgradis, OMGSLAYTON) and decided that I would love to know what some of you out there love to see in PvP videos. I’m not just looking for what you like - I’m looking for specific examples in a PvP video so I can see it myself!

Oh, the goodies. Lookie it’s muh rauge!

- What turns you on when you watch PvP videos? What sets the mood off?

- What are some of your favorite flicks (you don’t have to confine yourself to just Paladin videos!)

- Do you light candles for the sexual sensation that is a two hour download off of Warcraftmovies for PvPness viewing?

I used to watch Swifty the (Alliance) Warrior’s video and get a soft-on - And still do often.

I think it had X7 or something in the video name.

He also had a ret paladin trailer in the end of it, which was great to see as it was back in the days of the Ret Bomb.

Also Drakedog’s(sp?) the Undead Warlock’s videos.

Not to forget the infamous Serenity Now crashing the ingame funeral.

I personally enjoy an opening scene where the character walks towards the screen while dramatic music plays in the background. Its unique and not many PVP films feature this technique…

But in all seriousness, I like to see when a paladin(or any class) is losing a battle then manages to turn the tides. Insane crits and such are cool but we’ve all seen enough of those. I guess I just enjoy seeing the player intelligently using all the tools their class has to offer to achieve victory.

The combination of comedy and solid gameplay is what causes me to enjoy WoW movies the most. Movies by Kamil or Buddhist for example find a nice mix between the two.

  4. Irk

    RP and moar of it!!!!1

    No.

Survivability, especially nowadays with all the damage being put out by any class. Or anything with music that doesn’t suck :X

There needs to be FAR more emphasis on effective cc ad survival - as that is what wins games for the most part. We’ve all seen uber crits, we need to see slow mo’s of when that rep hits and counters the sheep that enables the rogue to hit that shit, clutch hand of protections that completely change the tide of battle. Seeing 2x dps rape something is so ho-hum. How about seeing more wins against stiff counters?

Most videos of rets just stir the masses (with their usual lolfaceroll diatribe) via seeing random massive bombs aka crits raining down on people over the course of a 3 minute video.

I loooooove pvp videos that show what the class is capable of like Grand Marshal Pat the warriors video.

Not just cheesey 3s set ups that how execution of each team mates abilities, but just shear brute force.

Old school videos i love would have to be GM Pats, or Dernos the paladin.

I can’t really get excited at level 70 or 80 pvp, i stick with the oldschool GM Pvp Videos.

  7. Brakkyn

Although I can’t offer any suggestions on what I’d like to see in videos, I would like to see some of these infamous videos made by people mentioned in this article/thread.

  8. Vanndread

No examples yet so he can see it himself?

It’s gotta be fun to watch, creative, and something worth sharing.
One my favorites, well make that my favorite video publisher recently quit. He only has a few videos, his paladin video is my favorite, but his Warrior is pretty epic too. Here’s a link too *drum roll* Kamaleaga.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnvfevTKuBE

I love the implosion bubbles he pops off all over the screen…

  9. Megaphone

Not too fond of Kamaleaga’s first minute of that video - ridiculously long slow motion dramatic opener followed by wings popped and massive zooming into crits. Hall of famer!

Zalgradis 3 : (You’re not allowed to be a Paladin without watching this)

    Jamaz 4 : (A bit more traditional)

Slayton 3 : (If there’s a soul out there that doesn’t know the king of the Rets, great shame.)

Arena movies bore the pants off of me. Half the time I don’t know whats going on, I’m an average pvper that used to sit around 2200 rating in 3s when I played. I only ever watched arena videos to try and pick up a few tips but I could never enjoy them.

Hoff’s movie with the battle royale in gurubashi arena is something I can watch again and again, but only that bit. It reminds me of a time gone by where leaving a city to quest or grind was something risky and frequently lead to world pvp. World pvp was why I played this game in vanilla and blizzard effectively killed that off with flying mounts.

So yeah, world pvp, thats what I like to watch in a pvp movie.

Ah, Jamaz and his Fist of the Heaven. Studying that video taught me everything I needed to know about old school pvp. I went from a down and out lawl bringer holy douche, to an tier 2.5 clad juggernaut with Sulfuras in tow. The playlist on Fist of the Heavens was definitely the soundtrack to my old school days.

  12. Bolivar

Ah, and cromer retribution. A very entertaining and accurate account of a decked out Retribution paladin in the 1.9 era http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2293402909936936147#

  13. Typhron

    Is dat sum Zalgradis?

That’s the person who got me into being a Paladin (and Engineer) in the first place. <3 Zal.

  14. Zealis

I remember watching a pvp video of a mage in BC and he would duel other players in the most interesting places/senarios.

Like on the chain leading to the summon stone of BRD, On moving Zeppelins/boats. I’d like to see that. I also love world pvp in videos, like from kamil’s early videos.

  15. Coelbren

    Zalgradis, hands down.

While Jamaz had some good PvP action which taught me quite a lot about PvP in PreBC, Zalgradis did it with style, grace and with the tongue firmly in the cheek. Dressing in full Shadowcraft and ganking people in Orgrimmar with a combination of Invis potions and the Engi trinket was funny as hell, not to mention impressive as all hell.

  16. Danoth

If I had to pick one pvp video and watch it until the end of time it would have to be Kamil 3. This video was the entire reason I rolled a ret paladin, and I believe I wouldn’t have been half as good as I was back in BC without it.

I love how in that movie he speeds up the video so it’s in perfect time with the music (incidentally there are no less than 4 songs that I find amazing in the video), and I wish more videos would attempt to do that.

  17. Brakkyn

    Spectacular videos–thanks for posting!

  18. Dstonehand

Its 3 parts skill, 2 parts humor, 2 parts good music and editing, and 1 part OMGWTFTHATGUYISBROKEN moments. 4v1s were some of my favorite parts of the old slayton PvP vids, and Khamil’s videos almost seemed like watching a movie rather than a pvp video (See Khamil 3-4’s duels).

  19. Dstonehand

    Kamil. No H.

  20. kookamonga

this is rather random ( i did enjoy the endless ret videos though) but do you have a general forum? im finding i have more and more questions about ret.

  21. douchebag

who dosnt love zalgradis?:P even though i watched it first when i was like 8 years old, so i see new things every time, now with jamaz!:O didnt know dat.

anyway go watch zalgradis, and i gotta admit, im weak for hofflerand too

  22. Hun_Bela

Dont forgot the World of Paladincraft series by Grievous:

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6643126605948590367&ei=tpRZS9CPD6be2wLV_JiuDQ&q=world+of+paladincraft#

I love all of them, the 1-2 is very good parody of a lots of chiting, and flaming, the third is a serius pro pvp, and the 4. is about mass destcruction.

  23. Brakkyn

Hammer of Wrath ganking + Lawbringer = Memories

  24. Kaiyo

Dremlock from Dunemaul has some pretty wicked movies out. Similar editing style to Buddhist, where he combines comedy with skill and blowing things up.

On a side note, An old school pvp video would be fantastic. World pvp, bgs, 1 v X is really where it’s at imo.

  25. cite

What I really liked about “Fist of the Heaven” is Jamaz’s versatile playstyle - he was good (well, as good as you could get in vanilla) at switching between healing, CC’ing and dishing out damage. What his (or Zalgradis’) and your videos lack are some slow motions of the important, tide changing things you do.

That said, I agree with world PvP being one of the things I’d like to see more.
